실전 영작 -  우리 사이의 보이지 않는 벽

저번 학기 까지는 교내의 영자 신문사에서 편집장을 맡아 일을 했었습니다. 현재는 퇴임하고 운영하는 부분을 도우면서 가끔 기사도 쓰고 있습니다. 많은 사람들이 영작하는 것을 어려워하는 것 같아서, 원어민 교수의 감수가 된 기사를 올립니다. 한 동안 블로그에 포스팅을 못 했는데 영작 팁과 더불어 많은 글을 올릴 생각입니다. 영문 글 아래에 한글 기사가 있으니 읽으시면서 참고하시길 바랍니다.

Invisible Wall between You and You

There are 150 foreign students, 50 foreign undergraduate students and 100 foreign students who are learning Korean in KPU. Many students live with them. However as the number of the foreign students increase, welfare programs for foreign students become more important. Are there the welfare programs for them? Or has the university tried to improve their treatment? To know about that, the KPU TIMES met with those it may concern.

50 foreign students learned and completed Korean education and entered KPU. The other foreign students are learning Korean in the Korean Language Education Center. The number of foreign students looks very small compared to the number of KPU students, which is about 7,000. So, they encounter many difficulties. The KPU TIMES met some students to know what they have difficulty with.

Most foreign students have a common difficulty. It is the problem of communication caused by difference of language. As a result, they find it hard to understand the major subject. Sometimes their Korean skills produce misunderstanding. Repeated misconceptions make it difficult for people to reach out to each other and they are caught in a vicious circle. Many students have a prejudice against the foreign students. So, to look into whether there is an institutional strategy for them or not, we contacted the two persons concerned.

First, THE KPU TIMES met a person who works for the student welfare department in KPU. He said that KPU supports only the room for cooking for foreign students and there is no welfare system for them as far as he knows. If the students learning Korean enter KPU as undergraduates, they could get all the benefits that KPU's students have. Because KPU's students also don't know the student welfare system well, foreign students probably do not know about that. He said the international exchange department is charged with the system for the foreigners in KPU and suggested that we contact them.

The Department of International Exchange works on all about international exchange. They provide not only the foreign students with what they need but also the students with an opportunity to go abroad. For example, there are Global Challenge and Global Field Training. A person who works for the department said they don't have anything to say about the welfare system for foreign students. However, they have already tried hard enough to handle the problem. They provide Korean language education to foreigners through the Korean Language Education Center. KLEC also teaches Korean culture. In addition, the mentor system is also very good. When a semester starts, they recruit volunteers as a mentor. Mentors become friend to foreigners and help them adapt to Korean culture. Mentors are a kind of bridge between the students and the foreigner.

It looks as though the university has tried enough to deal with the problem. Nevertheless, why do foreign students have difficulties?

It may be related to confidence. The KPU TIMES's first foreign reporter, Erdenebulgan Ayush, looked like he had also had a problem of communication, but he is becoming more confident as time goes on. Then, the problem was solved. An awkward Korean ability and pronunciation could be because the foreign students are lacking in confidence. Ayush's Korean ability and pronunciation are enough to communicate, but he has some episodes that happened because of those. In addition, this difficulty allows them to feel a sense of alienation. So they may hang out only with other foreign students.

On the other hand, there were some problems from our side. We have a bad prejudice against foreigners in developing countries such as South-East Asia in particular, more than anything else.  Therefore, there is a phenomenon to recuse the foreigners. Such behavior may hurt them. Also, we do not even try to talk with them because of the idea that foreigners seem not to be able to speak Korean well. Sometimes we sneer at them.

It is not too difficult to hang out with foreign students. Talk them first. It is the best solution. We are not different as you think. We are close, but we have also a big invisible wall that is too high to leap over. We have to make a kind of door in order to pass through the wall.

외국인 학부생 50명, 한국어 교육을 받는 학생 100여명 총 150여명의 외국인 학생들이 KPU를 다니고 있다. 많은 학생들이 그들과 수업을 듣고 생활하고 있다. 반면 외국인 학생의 수가 증가함에 따라 그들에 대한 복지 혹은 불편함을 개선하기 위한 노력이 계속되고 있을까? 이에 대해서 알아보기 위해서 관계자들을 만나보았다.

KPU에 재학중인 약 50여명의 학생들은 한국어 교육 센터에서 어학 교육을 마치고 학부로 입학한 학생들이다. 이외에도 아직 한국어 교육을 받는 학생들도 100여명에 달한다. 본교 학생들이 7000명이 넘는 것에 비하면 얼마 안되는 수치일 수 있다. 따라서 그들은 상대적인 소수라는 이유로 많은 불편을 겪을 것으로 생각된다. 그래서 몇 학생들을 만나 그들의 애로사항에 대해서 알아보았다.

대부분의 외국인 학생들이 겪는 애로사항은 공통적이었다. 바로 언어의 차이로 인해서 발생하는 의사소통의 문제였다. 이로 인해서 전공수업에 대한 이해가 되지 않아 학업에 힘들어했다. 또한 미숙한 한국어 실력으로 인해서 오해가 생기는 경우도 많다. 오해가 반복되면서 서로 다가가는 것이 어려워지고 끊이지 않는 악순환의 굴레에 빠지게 되는 것이다. 많은 학생들이 그들에 대한 편견이 생기고 또한 그들도 우리에 대한 편견을 가지게 된다. 그래서 그들을 위한 제도적 장치가 없는 것인지 궁금해졌으며 2명의 학교 관계자에게 연락을 취하여 알아보았다.

학생복지팀은 학생들의 복지를 담당하는 부서이며 관계자는 외국인 학생들을 위해서 학교측에서 제공하는 것은 그들이 식사 및 조리를 할 수 있는 공간을 제공해주는 것 뿐이라고 하였으며 외국인 학생들을 위해서 준비된 별도의 제도는 없다라고 말했다. 외국인 학생이라고 해도 학부생으로 입학하는 순간 학교에서 제공할 수 있는 학생복지를 누릴 수 있다. 하지만 한국인 학생들도 잘 모르는 부분이기 때문에 대부분의 외국인 학생들은 이에 대한 것을 알지 못할 것으로 생각한다. 관계자는 외국인 학생들에 대한 복지 및 프로그램은 인재교류원에서 담당하기 때문에 그들에게도 연락을 취해볼 것을 제안하였다.

인재교류지원팀은 국제교류에 관련된 전반적인 일을 한다. 외국인 학생들에게 필요한 것들 뿐만 아니라 한국인 학생들이 해외로 나갈 수 있는 기회를 제공하기도 한다. 대표적으로 글로벌 챌린저와 장기 해외 현장실습 등이 있다. 전화통화를 한 담당자는 이에 대해서 이야기할 내용이 별로 없다라고 답하였지만 생각보다 학교에서는 학생들의 애로사항인 의사소통 문제에 대해서 꽤 많은 노력을 하고 있었다. 기본적으로 한국어교육 센터를 통해서 한국어 교육을 하고 있었다. 한국어 교육센터에서는 한국어에 대한 교육뿐만 아니라 한국문화에 대한 교육도 하고 있었다. 또한 외국인 학생들을 위한 멘토 프로그램을 만들어 시행하고 있었다. 매 학기 외국인 학생들을 위한 멘토를 모집하고 있다. 멘토들은 단순히 학교 생활을 도와주는 것이 아니라 그들의 친구가 되어준다. 즉 외국인 학생과 한국인 학생의 연결 다리가 되어주는 것이다.

두 관계자의 이야기를 들어봤는데 충분히 학교는 노력하고 있는 것처럼 보였다. 그렇다면 왜 외국인 학생들은 그런 애로사항을 겪고 있는 것 일까?

무엇보다 자신감의 문제가 아닐까 생각한다. KPU TIMES의 첫 외국인 기자인 에르덴에 볼간과 지내면서 느꼈던 것이 바로 어눌한 한국어 실력과 발음 때문에 생긴 자신감 부족의 문제이다. 에르덴에 볼간의 한국어 실력과 발음 충분히 정확하다. 의사소통에 전혀 문제가 없었다. 하지만 자신의 한국어 실력과 발음으로 인해서 생겼던 몇 가지 에피소드들 때문에 자신감이 다소 부족했다. 또한 한국에 와서 자신들이 소수라는 소외감도 한 몫을 했던 것 같다. 그래서 오히려 동질감이 들었던 외국인 학생들끼리 어울리게 되었을 지도 모른다.

반면 우리들에게도 몇 가지 문제가 있었다. 무엇보다 외국인, 특히 동남아와 같은 저개발 국가의 외국인에 대한 안 좋은 편견을 가지고 있다. 그래서 외국인들은 기피 하는 현상이 있다. 사실 그러한 행동인 가장 큰 상처가 될 수 있다고 생각한다. 또한 외국인들이 한국말을 잘 못할 것 같다라는 생각으로 대화조차 시도하지 않는다. 한국말을 모른다는 약점을 가지고 간혹 조롱하기도 한다.

그들과 어울려 지내는 것은 어렵지 않다. 먼저 다가가는 것이 최고의 해결책이다. 생각하는 것만큼 우리는 다르지 않다. 또한 우리는 생각보다 그들과의 거리가 멀지 않았다. 하지만 그 사이에는 높은 벽이 존재한다. 그 벽은 너무 높아서 뛰어넘지 못한다. 서로가 먼저 그 벽에 문을 만들고 다가가야 한다.
